4 Ways You Can Deal with Self-Doubt

Self-doubt is a universal experience that everyone faces at different times in their lives. It is a natural aspect of being human.

However, how you respond to self-doubt is critical to overcoming it and staying on track toward success. Employing effective strategies to manage negative thoughts can help you effectively navigate these challenging moments.

Below are several practical approaches to help you tackle self-doubt when it arises.

1.    Resolve Not to Compare Yourself With Others

Self-doubt often creeps in when we compare our lives to those of others. To combat this, make a conscious decision ahead of time not to let it affect you.

When those feelings arise (and they likely will eventually), remind yourself that you are not that other person. Their path is uniquely different from your own. Take a moment to reflect on how far you've come on your journey. Remember, your journey is yours alone.

2.    Remember the Past is the Past

Many individuals struggle with self-doubt when reflecting on the past. Whenever those memories surface, remind yourself that they are behind you. Dwelling on what’s already happened can heighten feelings of self-doubt.

Instead, focus on the future and all the plans you have ahead. It may also be beneficial to jot down the things you’re grateful for in the present.

3.    Remind Yourself that Failures are Lessons

Everyone experiences setbacks at various points, a valuable part of personal growth. When you encounter a failure, it’s common to feel some self-doubt creeping in.

Rather than letting these feelings hold you back, use them as an opportunity for growth. Shift your focus from what went wrong to what you can learn from the experience. Concentrating on the lessons learned will build your confidence and empower you to make better choices in the future.

4.    Have a Support System

There is nothing quite as challenging as facing self-doubt while feeling isolated, and it is crucial to establish a support system that you can rely on when these doubts surface.

This support doesn’t have to be in person; it could also come from an online forum or a virtual support group. What matters most is connecting with someone you trust and can lean on when the going gets tough. They can help remind you of what an incredible individual you are and your journey to reach this point.

Here are a few places to start:

  • Family Circle

  • Church/Civic Group Outreach

  • Friend Group of trusted individuals

  • Primary care physician referrals

  • School or Professional Counselors Office

  • Work Human Resources Office

  • Social Media Groups

  • Outreach Hotlines/Nonprofit Services

Ultimately, dealing with self-doubt is never a walk in the park. However, by following the four suggestions outlined in this list, you'll be well-prepared to tackle those feelings when they arise. Before you know it, you'll find yourself back on track, confidently pursuing your dreams as your best self!
